Your child checks KJSEA results on the KNEC portal at kjsea.knec.ac.ke. You accept the privacy and access notice, then enter the assessment number and one of the names registered to receive the results. Placement into senior school is a separate step, and it uses a combined score from three parts.

How can I see KJSEA results?
Learners, parents and schools can get results online and by SMS from the release date. The online route runs through the KNEC KJSEA portal. Checked on 26 October 2026, the portal page could not be loaded, so confirm the address on the official site before you rely on it.

Sources name two different sites. Capital FM and Kenyans.co.ke point to kjsea.knec.ac.ke for results, while The Star points to selection.education.go.ke/my-selections for school choices. Whether the portal gives subject scores is unconfirmed, so check the official site for the details.
Source: Capital FM, 2025
The SMS route is for school selection only. A Kenyans.co.ke editor's note corrects an earlier claim that the SMS service would also check KJSEA results.

How is the KJSEA exam graded?
The KJSEA is the summative assessment. It includes written examinations and dry projects.
Source: The Star, 2025
The total score has three parts, and each part carries a fixed share.
| Part | Share of total score |
|---|---|
| KJSEA summative assessment | 60 per cent |
| KPSEA, taken in Grade 6 | 20 per cent |
| School-based assessments, Grades 7 and 8 | 20 per cent |
Source: Kenyans.co.ke, 2025
Each subject carries a maximum of 8 points. Nine subjects are tested, which gives a possible total of 72 points. Parents who want to know more about the older primary test can read our KPSEA results guide.

Kenya Times says the 2025 system uses eight achievement levels, and points are awarded according to performance. No learner gets a zero, because even very low scores earn a point.
Source: Kenya Times, 2025
Kenyans.co.ke describes four performance bands: Exceeding Expectations, Meeting Expectations, Approaching Expectations and Below Expectations. The exact score range for each band is unconfirmed, because the two sources we read give different ranges. Check the official site for the ranges.
Source: Kenyans.co.ke, 2025
Exact percentage marks are not shown to candidates, according to Kenyans.co.ke. Kenya Times does list percentage ranges for each level, so it is unconfirmed whether KNEC publishes percentages. The worked example below comes from Kenya Times and shows how the parts add up.
Source: Kenya Times, 2025
Kenya Times gives this example. A learner scores 40 in the KJSEA, 15 in school-based assessment and 10 in the KPSEA.
| Part | Score |
|---|---|
| KJSEA | 40 |
| School-based assessment | 15 |
| KPSEA | 10 |
| Final score | 65 per cent, which is ME1 |
Source: Kenya Times, 2025
The KJSEA carries 60 per cent of the total, so it moves a learner's final score more than the KPSEA or the school-based assessments do. The total is a mix of all three parts, so check each part's share when you read the result slip.

How does KJSEA decide senior school placement?
Placement into senior secondary school, which is Grade 10, is based on a combined score from three components. The three components are the ones shown in the table above.

Schools fall into four categories. C1 is national, C2 is extra county, C3 is county and C4 is sub-county. Placement into each category is based on merit. Our guide to national and extra county school clusters explains how these groups are often discussed.
Source: Kenya Times, 2025
Some senior schools are triple pathway institutions, which offer all three routes. Others offer two. The Education CS named the senior school pathways as STEM, Arts, Sport Science and Social Sciences.

Capital FM reports that the results show the most suitable senior school pathways for each learner. Whether a learner can choose between pathways is unconfirmed, because no source we read answers that question.
Source: Capital FM, 2025
Sources also do not publish a cut-off score. Placement is merit based, but no source gives a score that guarantees a national school. To look up schools in your area, use our school search.
