KCSE grading system: the 12-point scale with grades A to E, from the 2024 KNEC regulations

The KCSE grading system gives every subject a grade from A to E, and the whole exam ends in a mean grade read on a 12-point scale, where A is worth 12 points and E is worth 1 point. Mathematics always counts toward the overall grade. So does the better of English or Kiswahili. Your five best remaining subjects fill the rest of the calculation.

What is the grading system for KCSE 2026?

The system in use is the revised grading system introduced in 2023. KNEC released the 2025 KCSE results under the same system. No change specific to 2026 was found when this guide was checked on 26 October 2026, so the revised system is still the rule to plan around.

The older method is still in circulation, and it causes confusion. Under the old seven-subject system, the aggregate counted English, Kiswahili, Mathematics, two sciences and two other subjects. Citizen Digital reports that the old grading was criticised for hurting learners whose best subjects fell outside the set cluster.

The 2024 KNEC user guide still says aggregate points are based on seven subjects. That conflicts with the 2024 regulations, so the regulations are the rule this guide follows.

What is the current grading system?

Subject results are shown as grades from A to E. The overall result is the mean grade, and the 12-point scale applies to that overall grade and to the reading of aggregate points. The table below shows the grades and mark ranges that the regulations state. These five grades were the ones confirmed from the regulations.

GradePointsMarks (percent)
A (Very Good)12Above 79
B+ (Good)1070 to 74
C+ (Average)755 to 59
D-225 to 29
E (Poor)1Below 25

Keep two kinds of number apart. The percentage range is the band of marks that a subject score falls into. The points figure is what that grade adds to the total. Readers often mix these up, so check which one a source is giving you before you compare results.

Where does B+ start in KCSE?

B+ starts at 70 percent. It is worth 10 points, and it sits between A and C+ on the scale.

The step from raw paper marks to a subject grade was not confirmed beyond these percentage bands. Check the KNEC website before you rely on any other band or conversion table.

How are KCSE marks calculated?

Candidates must enter for at least 7 subjects to sit KCSE. The results include a mean grade and aggregate points for the whole examination. The overall grade is based on Mathematics, the better of English or Kiswahili, and the five best remaining subjects.

The exact formula that turns total points into a mean grade was not found on any page checked on 26 October 2026. Anyone who wants to work out a mean grade by hand should check the KNEC site for the formula first. Our guide to KNEC portals explains where official results and documents are published.

A subject grade and the mean grade are different results. A subject grade shows how one subject went. The mean grade is the single figure for the whole examination, and it is the figure that decides direct university entry.

What grade is 54 points in KCSE?

No official conversion from 54 points to a mean grade was found. The 2024 user guide has points bands for each grade, but it describes the older seven-subject total. Those bands were not confirmed for use under the current rule, so they should not be used as a conversion for a current result.

If you need the exact conversion for a result, ask KNEC directly before you trust a chart from another website. The safest reference for now is the official regulations, and the 2024 regulations PDF is the closest official document found. Any chart that claims a fixed points-to-grade table should be treated with caution until KNEC confirms it.

How many points is D minus in KCSE?

D- is worth 2 points and covers marks from 25 to 29 percent.

What is a grading chart?

No subject-by-subject grading chart with mark ranges was found beyond the general 12-point scale. A KNEC document for 2025 or 2026 in that form was not found as of 26 October 2026. The 2024 regulations PDF is the closest official document to what most readers are looking for.

The 2025 results show how many candidates cleared that bar. Out of 993,226 candidates, 270,715 reached direct university entry. KUCCPS reports a slightly lower figure, 268,700, because the two sources use different totals. Both figures are reported as stated.
