Online jobs in Kenya that pay through M-Pesa: what is real, what is a scam and how to start

Some online work does pay out to M-Pesa. Genuine work does not ask you to pay first. Here is how to tell the difference.

Some online work does pay out to M-Pesa, but the guides we read say genuine online work does not ask you to pay money before you start earning. If anyone asks for an activation, registration or processing fee, treat the offer as a scam. We checked these points on 26 October 2026, and where a point could not be confirmed, we say so.

Which online jobs pay through Mpesa?

Upwork is the only platform in our sources that clearly lists an M-Pesa withdrawal. Elevate Pay says the M-Pesa option works in Kenya only, arrives the same day, and carries a fee that varies. Because the fee is not fixed, check the exact figure in your own account before you withdraw.

OptionWhat Elevate Pay listsFee
Upwork to M-PesaKenya only, arrives the same dayVaries
Upwork to PayoneerArrives in 1 to 3 days outside the USAbout $2 plus Payoneer's fees

From 1 September 2026, Upwork also charges $2.99 for each ACH withdrawal to a US bank if your tax address is outside the US. That charge applies to US bank withdrawals, so it is separate from the M-Pesa option.

We could not confirm any other platform that pays out to M-Pesa. We also did not confirm Upwork's M-Pesa setup steps or its activation period, and we did not confirm Fiverr's withdrawal fees or Remotasks' pay rates. Read each platform's own help pages before you rely on them.

What can I do online to make money in Kenya?

McTaba Labs says Upwork, Fiverr and Remotasks are free to join. A real platform does not ask you to pay to start, so that is your first test. Survey and data entry sites are a different case. They can take hours of your work and then refuse to pay you, even after you reach the minimum payout.

Pay-to-earn schemes work differently. You deposit money to activate an account, and the earnings rarely repay that deposit. Some people get nothing at all.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) warned on 28 September 2026 about online fraudsters who flaunt lavish lifestyles on social media. The warning names forex trading, cryptocurrency and Telegram signals among leading scams. We did not find a DCI warning that covers job scams. The Capital Markets Authority has also issued an alert against unlawful and unregistered investment entities.

Which online work is best for beginners?

We could not confirm a best online job for beginners. No source we read gives a realistic beginner income per day or per month, so we will not guess one. Any figure you see for a beginner should make you ask who is paying and why.

The safest starting point is a platform that is free to join and asks you for nothing before work begins. McTaba Labs names Upwork, Fiverr and Remotasks as free to join, but that is not the same as a confirmed earnings route, so test each one yourself.

What jobs can I start quickly?

Be careful with any offer that asks for money before you start. The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) says it charges no fees for recruitment, job awards, tenders or supply opportunities. It says anyone who asks for money in exchange for a job should be treated as a scam and reported to the authorities.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) reported a fake appointment letter that asked a successful applicant to pay Ksh4,500 as a processing and clearance fee. KRA says it does not charge any fee at any stage of its recruitment process.

How to check an online job offer before you pay anyone

Work through these steps before you send money, share a code or sign up for anything.

  1. Ask whether the offer wants you to pay. The guides we read say real companies do not ask for money during hiring.
  2. Check who runs the background check. The same guides say real companies handle background checks themselves.
  3. Treat any promise of a fixed income as a warning sign. McTaba Labs says guaranteed income claims are false.
  4. Check whether the platform is free to join. Upwork, Fiverr and Remotasks are free to join, according to McTaba Labs.
  5. If a client asks you to talk off the platform, treat it as a red flag on Upwork.
  6. If an offer claims to be from a government agency, remember that KRA and KURA charge no fee for recruitment.
  7. If you already paid through M-Pesa, forward the original transaction message to 456 and report the fraud to Safaricom's fraud reporting line.
  8. Never share your M-PESA PIN or account details with strangers. People Daily reports that Safaricom's customer care team does not ask you to visit an agent for a reversal.

Speed matters when you have been defrauded. Safaricom can sometimes reverse a transaction or freeze the receiving account if the fraud is reported quickly enough. Blogs give different time limits for a reversal request, and we have not confirmed Safaricom's official limit. Check Safaricom's own site for the current rule, and report the same day you notice.
