Scheme of work generator for CBC teachers
A free scheme of work builder for any grade, learning area and term. Set the weeks and lessons, type in your strands and outcomes, then print it or download it as Word or Excel. It works for 2026, 2027 and every year after, and it keeps your draft in your own browser. We are not TSC or KICD.
Last checked 26 October 2026. Every figure below names its source.
Build your scheme of work
Choose the grade, learning area and term. Use your school's calendar for the number of weeks, because terms differ. For 2026 the Ministry calendar has Term One at 13 weeks and Term Three at nine weeks, from 24 August to 23 October, as reported by Kenyans.co.ke.
Use your school's calendar for the opening date and the number of weeks. The tool does not guess them. A date only fills the week labels.

What goes in each column
- Strand, sub-strand and specific learning outcomes: copy them from the KICD curriculum design for your grade and learning area. Each sub-strand in a design lists specific learning outcomes, suggested learning experiences and key inquiry questions (CBC Edu Kenya).
- Learning experiences: what the learners do, not what the teacher says (CBC Edu Kenya).
- Key inquiry questions: the questions that guide the lesson. One guide says a sub-strand usually has two to four.
- Learning resources and assessment: what you will use and how you will check learning.
- Reflection: written after the lesson, not before.
Why teachers keep one
The TSC checklist lists approved schemes of work among the professional documents a teacher must keep, and a supervisor can assess them for appraisal (Education News Hub). In 2024, reports said schemes of work and lesson plans would be TPAD evidence approved by headteachers and their deputies (Teachers Arena). See the TPAD guide and the TPAD checklist, and use the lesson plan generator for the detail of each lesson.

Questions people ask
- What is a scheme of work?
- A scheme of work is the week-by-week plan showing what will be taught in a subject over a term. A lesson plan gives the detail for one lesson. The TSC checklist of professional documents lists approved schemes of work separately from lesson plans, lesson notes and records of work.
- Do TSC teachers have to prepare schemes of work?
- The TSC checklist says teachers must prepare, use, update and keep their professional documents, and it lists approved schemes of work or work plans among them. It also says failing to keep them may lead to disciplinary action. We read this on a news site that reproduces the checklist, because the TSC site would not load for us, so confirm with your head teacher.
- Is there one official format for a scheme of work?
- We found no TSC or KICD document that prescribes one national format. Guides differ on the number of columns. The layout in this tool is a common CBC one. If your school or sub-county asks for a different layout, download the Word file and edit it.
- How do I fill the learning experiences and reflection columns?
- One CBC guide says the learning experiences column describes what learners do, not what the teacher tells them, and that the reflection column is filled in after the lesson. Copy the strand, sub-strand and specific learning outcomes from the KICD curriculum design for your grade and learning area.
- When must the scheme of work be ready?
- News reports in 2024 said the TPAD institution calendar gives the end of the first week of the term as the deadline for submitting professional documents. A 2026 report says teachers should keep their records up to date through the term. Check your school's TPAD calendar for the current rule.
- Will this work for 2027?
- Yes. The tool holds no year or term dates of its own. You choose the term and the year, and you can type your opening date so the week labels fill in. Use your school's calendar for the number of weeks. We had not seen the 2027 Ministry calendar when we checked.
- Does the tool save my work or send it anywhere?
- It remembers your draft in this browser only, so you can come back. Nothing is sent to us. Use Clear to remove it, and use a private window on a shared computer.
- Why does the tool not include the KICD strands and outcomes?
- KICD publishes its curriculum designs as view-only documents, and we do not copy them. We have asked KICD for permission to offer their strands and outcomes as a pick list. Until they agree, you type or paste them from the design.
